My Artist Statement

How I got here, where I am going

Movement has never ceased to make me feel a million miles an hour. Like the feeling right before the best night of your life, like the feeling of falling in love, like the feeling of being alive; it is captured in dance and held sacred to be felt over and over and over. This is what draws me to work as a performing dance artist-- finding the beauty in the inevitable. Like the sun rising every morning and setting every night or the Earth spinning on its axis for 365 days every year. Working with a choreographer is much the same. Walking into rehearsal and drilling a routine so many times the roots of the dance have curled into the center of the world, taking hold so tight that it feels like it could just be stuck there. Yet, every time the curtain is pulled, the audience settles, and I take my first breath, catapulting into my first dance, the branches of the movement unearth to reveal something totally new. It is reborn through the eyes of the audience, and as they experience the piece for the first time, so do I. Creating something is a shared endeavor and is catalysed by the choreographer. I discover the story of the creator and make it my own through the process. There is something new to be unveiled in every audition, rehearsal, and even within the same step, a new story to be told. I will continue to share these stories, to feel them, to dance them.
